[specimen] Specimen vs fluidsynth

Hi,

I am looking for an open source sampler for a project I am working on. A
couple of questions:

1) What are the relative merits of specimen vs fluidsynth? I know
fluidsynth isn't a sampler as such, but it has sampler-like
functionality.

2) I would be interested in making specimen into a DSSI plugin. I
haven't looked at the code yet - but would you consider this to be
straightforward, or is Specimen not suited to this?

3) How active is specimen development?
