That is what should happen. I tested building it here with all
combinations I could think of, but perhaps I missed something. As you
expected, this ought to just work.

what does jackd --version say? Did you remove your previous jack
installation? If I recall correctly you were, understandably, reluctant
to switch to a built-from-source jackd from the debian packages so you
would not be forced to remove all your jack client packages.
