You still need per-patch controls (the ones at the top) in order to adjust 
volume and panning individually for each patch. The new controls in the 
bottom will adjust the common volume and panning for the selected MIDI 
channel. For instance if some of your patches listen on the same channel, 
then using your MIDI keyboard's volume controller for that channel will 
adjust the common volume of that _group_ of patches.

The former behavior was that when the MIDI volume controller was used, all the 
patches' individual volumes would change to the new value. So if you had two 
patches whose volumes were 0.7 and 0.9, and you turned your controller knob 
to 0.5, then both patches' volumes would change to 0.5. That was certainly 
buggy behavior, and also the reason behind the coming changes.
